McLaren's F1 Upgrades Show Promise Despite Azerbaijan Challenges
Written with artificial intelligence.

McLaren's Formula 1 team introduced significant updates for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, including redesigned sidepods and rear suspension. Despite mixed qualifying results, the team is optimistic about the performance impact of these upgrades, even as they face challenges on the circuit.
Underwhelming Qualifying Performance
McLaren's recent qualifying performance at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix fell short of expectations, with Lando Norris expressing frustration after finishing fifth and Oscar Piastri qualifying third. Norris noted that the team struggled throughout the weekend, highlighting a gap of 1.5 seconds in practice compared to the leaders, which he described as 'miles off.'
Major Upgrades Implemented
The team brought a comprehensive set of updates to the MCL40, including revised sidepods, an engine cover, a new floor, diffuser, rear suspension, and rear wing. Team principal Andrea Stella confirmed that while the upgrades were effective, they did not deliver the same performance leap as previous updates seen in Hungary. Nonetheless, the team gathered promising data from these changes.
Challenges on the Baku Circuit
Stella acknowledged that the characteristics of the Baku circuit posed specific challenges for McLaren, particularly due to the lack of medium- to high-speed corners and the car's performance in straight-line speed. The upgrades added some aerodynamic load but did not significantly alter the car's performance profile on this demanding track.
Data-Driven Approach
To maximize the effectiveness of the upgrades, McLaren utilized flow-visualization paint on Norris' car until the end of Free Practice 3, allowing engineers to observe airflow directly. This approach demonstrated the team's commitment to fine-tuning their setup throughout the practice sessions, resulting in a solution they were satisfied with by the end of FP3.
